LA modo user group meeting at the studio

Saturday Neville Page and I hosted the LA modo user group meeting here at our studio. Here is Wes Ball walking us through his techniques for creating his short film "Ruin" which Wes says is about one or two months from completion. So far it looks great! I shared a bit of what I've been doing with my "replicator" suit design studies. Which are ever changing and heading into some new directions now after the meeting.

Hey All,

Happy Holidays!

BLAST is now complete and off to press! I'm very happy with the book the guys put together. We expect it to arrive back here for sale in March. It's nice to have it all wrapped up before the holidays. Here are a couple of spreads from Annis Naeem, Danny Gardner and myself from the final book as well as the finished cover just completed this morning. Head on over to the DSP site and reserve a copy! Lucca - DSP booth sketches

Here are a couple of demos I did while sitting in the DSP booth during days 2 and 3 of the show. The dino-bot is a continued work-in-progress of the very early rough sketch I post awhile back. The Alien was done on Halloween as a Photo Booth/Photoshop example.

This is a sketch I did for Luca Z. (the author of ABAKAN 2288) while working in the DSP booth today during the Lucca Comics and Games show. It's a paint over of the prototype for his next resin kit. You can see the primer grey model in the FG of the picture I posted to my FB page of him signing his new book. I snapped a shot with my camera and colorized and weathered it up a bit. Still more to do if it's going to be used as a final rendering for anything beyond the blog. Today is also his birthday, so be sure to wish him well on his FB page!

BLAST detail

As I finish up my renderings for BLAST I'll some detail shots here as there will not be enough room in the book to include them. Now that the workshop weekend is over I'm hustling to get all of the renderings done so the book will release on time in March. A little delay in that progress will be my attendance again at the Design Studio Press booth in Lucca, Italy October 28th through November 1st. If you are in that area the end of next week be sure to stop by an say hello!

WALLSCAPES

Here is an example of another way I find inspiration for some of my environments. I call them "wallscapes" because I generate the the first image by pacing my camera on a wall and taking a picture. The wall then becomes the ground plane for my rendering and anything sticking out from the wall becomes the start for my architecture. In this case the raw image is a wallscape of the building on the corner of Younge and Dundas in Toronto. The other two images are stages of the work-in-progress of this piece. You can see I still have quite aways to go. I hope I can get it done before BLAST needs to go to press. If not, it goes into my educational book which is going to be my winter project.

Thanks to all of you who made it to my workshop last weekend. It was exhausting but also fun to share my latest ideas. Here are two pieces from the workshop. The black and white one was done before the workshop and was part of my talk on using value changes to show form changes. The green one was about a 20 minute demo on the ways I arrange layers in Photoshop when doing quick studies like this. Both started as quick snap shots from Photo Booth as we did in the book Alien Race.

This one has a long way to go but I thought I would share this in-progress peek. Most of the big values are close and the general lighting I like. I've very roughly placed a few photo textures over the foreground elements. I do this before I go back and make my last detailed design/rendering pass which is what is basically left for this one...one big grinder of a rendering day! The background structures came from a quick model/rendering made in modo.

This one started by building on a piece I had done for Lift Off. Not much remains from the original now but it was a fun way to get rolling. A few architectural elements were made in modo and then dropped in. The big ship started as a photo collage/mash up of one of my aerospace cars from DRIVE and the little one flying above it came from a little pencil thumbnail. It's sometimes fun to build scenes with various elements created using differing techniques before painting over it all to pull it together.

Here is the latest WIP effort for the book. The BG plate came from a trip to Mendocino, CA. The rest is Photoshop. I still need to finesse the vent things the crew have added to the ground where the mist/steam is rising from.

Here are the first six originals I have chosen to put up for sale on Ebay. As you can see the range is all over the place, an old pirate ship done with markers and black and white gouache, a funky retro sports car done with wax pencil and chalk, pen sketches for the other cars, wax pencil for the airplane and a bunch of hovercraft done with ballpoint and gouache. Hello All,

I was looking through my flat files last weekend and decided that it was a waste to have all of my originals camped in there hidden from view. I've identified about 340 pages of work I am going to start offering for sale on my "drawthrough ebay page." The work varies a lot from demos done for my DVDs and classes I have taught at Art Center to pieces published in Start Your Engines, Lift Off, Alien Race, Concept Design 1 and 2 and most recently DRIVE. I might keep a small number of pages for myself but I think that teachers around the world could use these as examples for their students and some would look nice framed hanging on the wall. If you have enjoyed my traditional media work in the Design Studio Press books and on my blog and website then just sign up to the mailing list on the drawthrough site to be notified as the work goes on sale or just follow this blog. I'll start posting the work this weekend.

As you might have been able to deduce by my lack of posts since mid November that I've been working on several freelance jobs I cannot talk about, hence the lack of personal work to share here. Yes! Finally after almost a month, DRIVE makes it through customs! That means the bulk shipment is now on its way to our warehouse back east and books will start to ship very soon off of our website and to our normal retailers.

I was enthusiastic to report that DRIVE had arrived early, which it did, but now I'm sad to report that customs has placed the warehouse shipment on examination hold, where it has been for the past 3 weeks on the east coast!

DRIVE arrives early!

Part of the bulk shipment of DRIVE arrived this week to Design Studio Press a couple of weeks early. Nice to get one in ahead of schedule! The rest of the bulk shipment going to our east coast warehouse is currently going through customs. We hope to still beat our official release date of November 10th. When the bulk clears customs we will start to fill our website orders. If you want a copy of the book before that, Stuart Ng just left here with a box of softcovers http://www.stuartngbooks.com/ and a box of each soft and hard will be delivered to the Art Center student store later today.

I was to be on my way to Lucca, Italy last night for the great Lucca Comics and Games festival. Unfortunately I've been under the weather this month and my doctor has grounded me so I will not be at the DSP booth this year. In my place I have flown Chirs Ayers, author/artist of "The Daily Zoo 1 & 2" to Italy to take my place at the booth.

DRIVE will be sold there starting this Friday. We had the text translated into Italian and printed as a black and white document to be given away with each book. So, if you happen to be going to Lucca this weekend for the show, I'm sorry I will not see you this year. I plan to be there again next year with another new book or two.

Oh yeah, almost forgot the collectible slipcased version of DRIVE, limited to 250 signed and numbered copies, each personalized with a sketch will be available only through our website starting this Friday.

The first advance copy of DRIVE just arrived and it looks great. Nice to see it in book form. Always a little nervous opening the package for the first time, but all's well and I'm happy to announce that it looks like 4 boxes of advance soft covers were delivered to CCS in Detroit this morning, meaning that there should be 48 soft covers for sale at 4:30pm tomorrow afternoon outside the auditorium where I will also be signing them before my presentation of the book at 6pm. These will be the only books sold publicly before the release date of November 10th. Hope to see you there. Off to the airport!

We have been working hard and today we reached a milestone for the completion of DRIVE, all of the art is complete! Here are few spreads and the final cover of the book. The first 65 pages of text are done as well and I will have the rest done by the end of this week. We will be showing an HP designjet proof of the entire book at Comic Con next week. back from 17 days in Italy

I hope to have some new work to show soon now that I'm back in the studio after spending 17 days traveling through Italy with my wife, Melissa, we visited Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Venice with a few quick trips into the stunning Tuscan countryside. In the meantime here are a few images from the trip.

BTW Annis and Danny are doing some great finished renderings for DRIVE.

I am now back in the studio after spending a few days at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit doing lectures in their fabulous new facilities and 6 more days spent in New York city for the world premiere of my wife's next movie, Just Wright coming out next week on the 14th, http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/justwright/

While in NYC I visited the Met as usual and spent a day at the American Museum of Natural History taking hundreds of photos of their great displays. Here is one of the many shots I took during my day there.

Update on the completion of DRIVE, I'm very happy to report that Annis Naeem and Danny Gardner, two of my Art Center students, are now on the job helping to get the rest of the book done by the end of June. With their help the book is going to really sing! More DRIVE image updates coming over the next month as we wrap it up.

This one is not making the cut for the book, so I thought it could live on here. I have finished my rough compiling of the book and it is going to be 176 pages! 32 more than Start Your Engines and Lift Off, each at 144 pages. Now the next big push will be to tweak and tweak until each spread is the best it can be.

Four example spreads which are just first cuts right now. Two from the military styling chapter and two from the pro-sport styling chapter. Color of text headers and book credit at bottom of the pages TBD. Bit of everything on these pages, modo 3D and rendering bases, Photoshop painting over the top, Alchemy sketches with Photoshop again, then some simple pen sketches.
